Working in New Zealand
Many international students work part-time while they study in New Zealand, and some go on to start their careers here too. If you're thinking about working in New Zealand, it's important to understand your work rights – especially since they relate to the rules of your visa.
Work while you study
A part-time job can be an excellent way to get more out of your study experience in New Zealand.
- It provides opportunities to practise your English (if you need to), and to learn about what it's like to work here.
- You can gain valuable skills through work experience, which can help you prepare for your future career.
- Earning an income can help you cover your living expenses and give you extra spending money so you can enjoy the New Zealand lifestyle even more.
The New Zealand Government allows full-time international students with a student visa to work up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and full-time during holiday breaks. This depends on the duration of the course, your age and other factors. Your visa conditions will outline if you're allowed to work or not.
Work after you graduate
Post-study work visas
If you study as an international student in New Zealand, you can apply for a post-study work visa when you graduate. This visa allows you to work full-time in New Zealand for one to three years, depending on your qualification.
It is an excellent way to build your skills, find full-time job opportunities, and start your career while you keep enjoying New Zealand. As you build up your work experience, you might also use this as a pathway to apply for residency in New Zealand – through the Skilled Migrant Category, for example.
