Study abroad and exchange

Are you looking to have a life-changing international experience as part of your studies? The University of Auckland has partner universities all around the world, enabling students to have short-term international study experiences. These can be anything from summer school and student exchange, to semester-long study or a full year of subjects.

This is your opportunity to broaden your international perspectives, make lifelong connections and friends from different cultures, and have an unforgettable adventure in another country.

Inbound student international experiences

If you are already studying at another university outside of New Zealand but want to add an international experience to your studies, we invite you to visit us in Auckland.

Immerse yourself in the rich Māori culture, be inspired by world-class education and explore the beautiful surrounds that New Zealand is famous for. Study for a semester, stay for a gap year between your studies at home, or choose from summer school courses, professional practicums and internships. We also have specially designed co-curricular programmes to make your semester-long or year-long study experience even more memorable.

The following programmes and experiences are available.

Semester study abroad and exchange

Study at the University of Auckland for one or two semesters, and credit the courses you study here back to your qualification at your home university.

International Research Programme (Faculty of Arts)

For six to eight weeks, join other study abroad research students and work alongside Faculty of Arts academics on research projects that address complex global issues – from refugee resettlement to political branding and indigenous identity.

Summer school

Instead of a full semester, study one or two subjects over an intensive six-week period from early January to mid-February. Enjoy the mild summer weather and the best of Auckland.

Clinical Exercise Physiology Practicum

Get practical learning experience in Clinical Exercise Physiology in this two-course plus 200-hour practicum that meets requirements for registration with professional organisations in your home country.

Internships (Faculty of Arts)

If you have completed two years of degree studies and mainly take courses within our Faculty of Arts as a study abroad student (semester-long), you can gain work experience through undertaking a project in a New Zealand workplace.

Gap year in New Zealand

Are you looking for an adventure between full-time studies in your home country? Get set with a working holiday visa, and spend a year in New Zealand’s biggest and most diverse city. Study for a semester, and spend the rest of your gap year working and exploring the country.

Co-curricular programmes

Add these incredible experiences to your semester or year of studying in Auckland. Our unique co-curricular programmes are designed to make your stay unforgettable, and give you experiences to take you even further on your adventures.
