Internship opportunities
Gain valuable work experience while you study in New Zealand.
With an internship, you can gain valuable work experience while you study, and make the most of your time as a student in New Zealand. These short-term opportunities involve working with a real workplace on projects or providing assistance where needed, and also receiving training and guidance from professionals.
An internship sets you up in a work environment where you can:
- Build professional skills while you study
- Learn about New Zealand's workplace culture (or another culture if your internship is overseas)
- Put your learning into practice with a real workplace
- Get feedback from professionals in your field of study
- Make professional connections that can help you when you want to find work later on
- Increase your chances of finding a job in New Zealand.
How an internship works
The way an internship works is usually up to the individual business providing the opportunity. You will usually be required to work for 6–12 weeks. Some internships involve a specific project, while others offer on-the-job training more generally. Some internships will need you to work at a specific location, while others are done online (virtual). Some internships can also be done overseas. For some opportunities, you may receive payment, while other opportunities are unpaid, or require you to pay for your own travel.
How to find an internship
You might be required to complete an internship as part of your studies. Where this happens, usually your faculty will be able to help you find the right internship opportunity for you, using their extensive professional networks.
Our experienced Career Development and Employability Services (CDES) team can also provide you with ideas, guidance and support to find an internship.
